Year of the Busybee
My splendid houseguest is gone. It's back to eating lunch straight out of the pot, making only eight cups of coffee for two people every 6 hours (as opposed to 12 cupsss every four hourssss), not bothering to close the bathroom door all the way, and the dog's back to attention-whoring and being a brat late at night...

Today, I finished the Happy Chinese New Year mix that I had intended to make since my last concerted mixmaking effort in 2005. This a compilation of Chinese-language songs spanning 1937 to 2005, heavy on the pre-1970s material, mostly upbeat stuff, and ready to rip. I'm forcing this on some of you as a much-belated response to previous gifts ([info]olivepixel, [info]vaulted_eel, [info]mehitabelbigsky, [info]city_of_walls), but the rest of you have to speak up if you want a copy -- especially since I need to doublecheck addresses (i.e. [info]sarabellum, [info]bafooz).

I'll come back to this with details later -- I'm too lazy to type out the Chinese, especially after having to retype and rearrange the tracklist MULTIPLE times for stupid CD burning programs that refused to work properly. I finally ended up using iTunes to burn the disc, which is what I should have tried to begin with -- I'll keep this in mind as I compile the followup projects: mixes dedicated to the Orphans of Asia (which will include scads of Chinese and Taiwanese songs about mothers, fathers, and of course, the absence of mothers and fathers), springtime (no shortage of Chinese songs with 春 in the title), dreams (no shortage of Chinese songs with 夢 in the title), and songs about selling stuff (賣煙歌, 賣糖歌, 賣肉粽, 歌女之歌, etc.).

Oh yeah, I was planning on compiling a mix of non-Chinese tunes too, but I feel woefully behind on new music, having spent the last three years digging myself deep into these Sinophonic musical and filmic trenches. ;)

Yes I want.

To what email should I send my mailing address(es)?

I would love a copy! My aspiring-to-ethnomusicology girlfriend would probably know all the lyrics by heart within two days despite not knowing a lick of Mandarin or Cantonese, cause she's fucking brilliant like that. Would you like a Bollywood mix in return? Or French hip-hop? We've got some ready-made...

Oooh... I love me some Bollywood. And this should add plenty to your girlfriend's arsenal of ethnomusicological knowledge. Would you like me to mail it to you (I finally visited San Fransciso, btw ;]) or should we arrange something on campus sometime?

Well by golly, force away! I was actually going to ask you for a copy when you mentioned it before, but then it slipped my mind.

I've got to get back into the habit of making mixes. That one I sent you a while back was the last one I put any real effort into at all... lately they've all been along the lines of "bunch of songs I want to listen to while driving" or "stuff that's good to wash dishes to" or what-have-you. I'm sure no one wants to hear my dishwashing music.
connection closed[info]woquinoncoin on January 10th, 2007 08:53 pm (UTC)
Dishwashing could be a challenging theme! ;)

I've always enjoyed your mixes. I think I've said before that you were one of the first mixmakers I knew who really incorporated crafted transitions and truly blend things up in a freeform-like aesthetic. Ah... someday, when I go back to Kalamazoo and unearth my crates of decorated mix tapes, I'll have an entry to post about all that.

Yes, to Seattle. If you don't have my address, I will email it to you. Thank you very much again!

Awww, I'm splendid? Really? ;) It was great fun to see you guys, I can't wait 'til we can do it again (and if I wind up on the West coast, maybe you guys can come visit meeeee!). I impressed some old Taiwanese dude on the plane today with my music collection.

It's probably easiest if you just send it to me, c/o ICLP:

Great idea
Been a blog reader. Loved your photos from the Lantern Festival, I'll definitely be interested in your Taiwanese songs. I did a posting awhile back on my other journal www.xanga.com/kataklypse about Taiwanese musicians, there's a part I and part II. Have you seen the documentary Viva Tonal? It's great.

Re: Great idea
I tried to leave a comment on your xanga, but it wanted me to create an account. Delurking week sounds like a neat idea, and I may have to follow suit. =) Thanks for commenting! I'd like to add your site to my sidebar. You seem much more in tune with current events and media than I am, since I have a tendency to get swallowed up in my own nostalgic media-gluts.

Viva Tonal is a great documentary! It was really *the* documentary that kicked off my interest in Taiwanese documentaries (and, apparently, a lot of other folks -- the documentary new wave was still on, when I left Taiwan). That's something you've really got to be in the middle of, to keep abreast of what's being produced... and I miss that immediacy, that sense of currency.

Anyway, if you'd like a copy of the mix, drop me a line with your address. My LJ e-mail is turned on (username @ livejournal.com).

Re: Great idea
That's one thing I don't like about Xanga. Still debating which blog format I prefer. Feel free to add my site to your sidebar. Not sure if I'm the most in tune, especially since I can't really read much characters and I haven't been back to Taiwan in a looooong time.

Any other documentaries you enjoyed or would recommend?

I sent you my snail mail via email. Thanks again. 8)

Re: Great idea
Loved the CD! Thanks again. I've been meaning to check out Labor Exchange Band so this was a good way to get introduce to them. Hohak Band sounds very promising. Wanted to do a jig just listening that song. ;p You have a huge selection of music. How do you do it? I've already bought way too many CDs this 2007 and it's only the start of the year. Good grief, how I love music. I'm curious to hear your other mixes.

Let me know if you ever want to start a Taiwanese music listening group or something, I need more folks to enjoy this music with. Recently I just came across this album called Jazz Formosa. These non-Taiwanese jazz musicians did jazz interpretation of old Taiwanese folk songs. I just got the album. To hear clips or buy the album go to http://www.benhans.com/EM%20Jazz%20Formosa.htm The producer Roger Yin is also selling it too.

Re: Great idea
I've been on a huge Labor Exchange Band binge, and have been listening to some of their offshoots as well, including the solo-ish project by 林生相. All good stuff. That song I put on the mix doesn't fit so well, thematically... or recording quality, or even language. ;) It's an obviously misplaced track, to me, but it's so pretty, I had to squeeze it in there somehow.

I'm an avid music collector myself, but since starting grad school, my music budget has been rather limited. =( So I'm counting on getting back into mixmaking and trading to add to my music collection. I still intend to buy music, but whereas I used to pick up maybe 100-200 pieces of music a year, I can only do a mere fraction of that now.

How would you propose we start a Taiwanese music listening group? I'm all for it, but I don't know what format we would use. I'm leery of sharing my own mp3s, but I do love trading tangible, material mix CDs and tapes -- whenever I have the time to assemble them!

Re: Great idea
I believe Kou Chou Ching did a song in honor Labor Exchange Band. Love LBE's message.

Any places or websites you recommend to buy music? So far Yesasia, is the only one I know about that's friendly to American born folks that have a limited knowledge in reading characters. Most of the places I've encountered here in Socal sell more contemporary A-pop, which I'm not as into, unless perhaps they're covering an old traditional song. Maybe I'm blind but I can't find albums of indie artists from Taiwan out here in the US.

Not sure about how to start up a music listening group. Always hear about them. Maybe I should attend some before I start one. ;p I'm actually still using the old school formats of CDs. I really need to get a MP3 player. Was always hoping, friends might kick in one for me, cuz I sure hell gave my share to a couple of other folks. (Who me bitter? ;p) Actually I'm one of those weirdos that actually still enjoy buying CDs, got to support my indie artists. I so need to get into Ebay. Yes, I'm a dinosaur.

Enjoy Pandora and Yahoo Music but they are lacking artists from Asia. And I have no idea why Yahoo Music US isn't shared with Yahoo Music Taiwan. Asian artists aren't recognized or given props here in the US/mainstream.

Maybe we could do reviews. My friend Hochie maintains this website www.taiwaneseamerican.org and he's always looking for writers. And I know some of the editors from Pacific Times and they're always looking for writers. They might even like you better since you actually have a good grasp of characters. I only know the basic.

I'd love to have a copy! I never know what to picture (hear?) in my head when you talk about chinese music.

Absolutely! A CD and a cup of coffee?
I kind of gave up with the packaging design... it still looks pretty, but it's a little flimsy, in my opinion. Maybe you can take a look at it and offer your own brilliant ideas.
subgirl[info]subgirl on January 13th, 2007 08:02 am (UTC)
Mmmm.... coffee n music. I like how that sounds.

As far as design, you're assuming I'm *brilliant* o.O!

Anypoo, yes, I'm horribly PMS'y and need all the bad things (caffiene, chocolate, fried things, salty things, etc) that I can shovel in. Esp. when it's freezy.
Kim Laughton[info]olivepixel on January 30th, 2007 01:37 am (UTC)
It arrived! Brilliant thanks!

Both music and packaging are perfect. That silver paper for the track listing - where did you get it, and did you print on it with a normal printer?
connection closed[info]woquinoncoin on February 2nd, 2007 12:30 am (UTC)
I was looking for some kind of heavier cardstock at Office Depot, an office supply chain here in the States... they didn't have cardstock, but they had that nice pearlized paper. It does indeed work with a normal laser printer. I couldn't resist! In retrospect, I should have picked up white instead of silver, because I really detest combinations of gold and silver... but both silver and white have inauspicious connotations, so neither would have been completely fitting for a new year's theme, but, well, it worked out.

i want a copy !!
i'm in 419 campbell most afternoons/evenings... and if not i have a mailbox on the 6th floor right across from the elevators...

here's a mix i just made. it's kinda trashy in parts, and possibly TOO freeform, but whatevs. it's fresh off the CDJs.
